Oak Gates (Private Commission)

This is one of Henry’s favourite commissions to date.

After meeting a lovely couple at a Craft in Focus event at RHS Garden Wisley, they had spotted a photo of a steam bent gate Henry had completed a few years ago and that’s started the conversation!

The other day with a good friend the gates were installed in Camberley, Surrey. They’ve been a little while in the making (you may have seen the steam bending videos!) but we’re super happy with the finished product!

A huge part of what we love here at HWD is sourcing the timber in the tree and being a part of the whole process through to the final product. In these gates the Oak came from West Chiltington and the Ash from Nutbourne  both less then 10 miles from our workshop in West Sussex.

dog bed, solid wood dog bed, bespoke dog bedHere you can see Brumble modelling the kurfed dog bed made out of locally sourced Sussex Ash. Kurfing is using just one piece of wood. The dog beds have a sturdy ply wood floor raised up off the floor to allow air to circulate and are available in ash and oak.

The beds are finished in an attractive durable hard wax oil creating a winning combination with local ash and oak. This Dog Bed can be made in a variety of colours and timbers. By dying the wood we have kept the grain of the Ash visible.

Medium -925 x 670 x 185 mm, suitable for collies, Labradors and other similar sized dogs
Small – 670 x 525 x 165 mm, suitable for any dog up to and including a cocker spaniel

Sadly the cushion is not included. But being the clever people that we are the Joules dog cushions are designed to fit inside our dog beds other cushions are likely to fit as well. Each bed is made bespoke so sizes might vary slightly.

This bed is a simple design made from English Oak.
The bed has been designed in a way that means it comes apart into small pieces so it can be taken up spiral stair cases and can be easily assembled again once in position.
The height of the mattress is low which enables the bed to be used in low or angled ceiling rooms. This helps to reduce the chances of banging your head.

The Mayan Table was inspired by a trip to Guatemala with my brother. This unique table represents those great structures my brothers and I scrambled up all those years ago in Guatemala. This is a new design for a coffee table has a hexagonal Sycamore top, with dyed ash strips narrowing up to form a single, central leg.

oak bench, outdoor furniture, benchThis piece was designed for the New Forest Trust Fine Crafted Wood Competition. The brief was to create an out standing piece of furniture. I was experimenting with multiple thin strips of MDF and bending them in my hands then the lowest strip slipped down creating a space. After a a lot of models, I had the rough idea of what I wanted to create. I tapered and angled the legs as this made the piece visually lighter and stronger. The seat frame was a result of not wanting a support at the base of the legs as I felt this broke up the sweeping lines of the piece. I won the People’s Choice Award at the New Forest Show for this bench.

I wanted to use free hand steam bending and originally thought of making a chaise-longue, but the piece started to look very heavy and cumbersome. The decision to turn this piece into a bench adds to the contrast having organic shapes meeting with a very structured and angular end. From the beginning I really wanted this piece to have great contrast not only organic to structured but also in contrasting light and dark timbers. This is a new for 2014. This steam bent bench is made out of Ash and Oak. The Ash was sourced and milled by Henry local to where he lives and works in West Sussex. The Oak is also a Sussex Oak. This bench is also finished for outdoor use. [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

The green oak was a tree that was uprooted in early 2014. We were lucky enough to be able to plank the tree ourselves and these shelves seamed like the perfect opportunity to use such a local and fresh piece of timber. Brown oak is a standard oak tree that has had the beef steak mushroom growing on and in it causing the wood inside the tree to be stained a dark brown. This also gives great contrast to the normal oak. This set of Orchard shelves were fitted in a beautiful cottage near Leighton Buzzard and designed to fit over the door. The Oak was resourced from Storrington, West Sussex and the Brown Oak from Liphook, Hampshire.   [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

BedThe Kerfed Oak bed is the perfect combination of luxury style and comfort. It was designed to celebrate the superb quality of Oak from English Woodlands. This is shown through the unique design – using 500 mm wide boards to showcase the full beauty of the grain. A bonus feature from a practical perspective is that the bed can easily be assembled and disassembled – so it can be built in even the most inaccessible bedrooms.

The bed is made using a technique called Kerfing. By removing small sections of timber from what will become the corners it means Henry can create smooth steam bent corners from one single 500 mm wide plank of Oak. The interior of the bed is made from pine slatted base to provide ultimate support. The bed is finished in an attractive durable hard wax oil creating a winning combination with the English Oak.

If you would like a bed just like this then simple get in touch: henry@henrywilliamsdesign.co.uk. The bed comes in a variety of different timber options.
